DELRAY BEACH INTERNATIONAL TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIPS!
World’s Only Nine-Day Combined ATP WORLD TOUR & ATP CHAMPIONS TOUR Event ~
February 20 – 28, 2010
DELRAY BEACH— (January 21, 2010) Eight-time ATP title winner Dmitry Tursunov, two-time Delray Beach ITC champion Xavier Malisse and big serving Ivo Karlovic are included in the 32-player draw released by the ATP World Tour for the upcoming Delray Beach International Tennis Championships (ITC). The event is scheduled for Feb. 20-28 at the Delray Beach Tennis Stadium & Center, and the ITC’s inaugural ATP Champions Tour event starring John McEnroe will also be played the same week.
The players’ entry list for the 18th annual ATP World Tour event also includes 2009 ITC runner-up Evgeny Korolev, 4-time ATP World Tour winner Taylor Dent and Weston’s Wayne Odesnik, who has reached a Top 100 ranking for the first time. Headline stars James Blake, Tommy Haas, and defending champion Mardy Fish announced their intentions to play in the event last fall. The world No. 1 Bryan Brothers will head the 16-team doubles draw.
The 27-year-old Tursunov will be making his Delray Beach debut. He played on Russia’s 2006 Davis Cup title team, reached his career-high ranking of No. 20 in the world that year, and has gained notoriety off the court as the ATP’s top tournament blogger. Malisse won ITC titles in 2005 and 2007 and was the runner-up three times since reaching his first career ATP final in this tournament in 1999 as a 17-year-old. The 6 foot, 10 inch Karlovic has led the ATP in aces the last three years and is ranked No. 37 in the world.
Still to be slotted in the draw will be four players from the qualifying tournament (played Feb. 20-21) as well as a pair of wild cards. “From top to bottom, the players in this draw will provide entertaining sessions for our fans,” said tournament director Mark Baron. “While we have young players who are beginning to make a name for themselves, there is plenty of star power as well.”
The ATP World Tour matches will commence on Monday, Feb. 22 with both the singles and doubles final scheduled for Sunday, Feb. 28. McEnroe will join seven other tennis legends in the 4-day round robin ATP Champions Tour event starting Feb. 20, with that final scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 23.
